Covered Butter Dish

The sleek two-piece butter dish stretches the chick's body into a long, low profile. Its rounded cover forms the elongated bird, with a yellow comb serving as the handle, while the matching underplate continues the line's pink floral decoration.

The simplified shape is especially effective here: despite the absence of wings and tail feathers, the large eye, projecting beak, and crest make the bird immediately recognizable from almost any angle.

Candleholder and Flower Frog

This squat chick is one of the line's most inventive multipurpose forms. A central opening in its back holds a taper candle, while six surrounding holes support cut flowers, greenery, or other small stems. The hollow body can hold water to keep the arrangement fresh.

Viewed from the front, it reads as a compact decorative chick. Viewed from above, its practical purpose becomes clear, making it both a centerpiece and a functional flower frog.

Creamer, Sugar Bowl, and Saccharin Server

Holt-Howard promoted this clever table service as a “double duty dandy.” The open beak of the creamer forms its pouring spout, while the matching covered sugar bowl conceals a second purpose inside the chick's head.

The removable head is itself a small saccharin server, clearly labeled across the top. Its underside contains a corked opening for filling the compartment, which was intended to hold as many as 100 saccharin or dietetic tablets. The arrangement neatly combines sugar, cream, and an artificial sweetener within just two coordinated vessels.

Thermal Egg Cups with Salt and Pepper Tops

This ingenious breakfast set combines insulated egg cups with individual salt and pepper shakers. The oval lower sections hold soft-boiled eggs, while the removable chick-head covers help retain warmth until the eggs are served.

Each head doubles as a shaker, identified with a black “S” or “P.” The seasoning is held inside by a cork and dispensed through three small openings in the beak. When assembled, the set looks like a pair of compact egg-shaped chicks; taken apart, its layered function becomes evident.

Full-Size Salt and Pepper Shakers

The matching full-size shakers use upright chick bodies perched on small yellow feet. Their slightly turned poses give the pair an animated, conversational quality when displayed together.

Unlike the shaker tops used with the egg cups, these figures contain built-in metal noisemakers in their bases. When moved or handled, the mechanisms produce the chattering sound associated with several Holt-Howard novelty shakers of the period.

Candle Warmer for Sauces

The sauce warmer is a two-piece ceramic set consisting of a chick-head serving bowl and a matching vented pedestal. The bowl's beak forms a pouring spout, while a handle at the back allows warm butter, gravy, dessert sauce, or another topping to be served directly at the table.

A candle placed inside the pedestal keeps the bowl's contents warm. Holt-Howard originally sold the warmer as a three-piece set because a specialized ten-hour candle was included with the ceramics.

The surviving hang tag shown here is especially valuable because it preserves the company's alternate branding for the collection: Little Bow Peep.

Trio of Chicks Nesting Trays

Three graduated chick-shaped dishes form a compact nesting set. Each bowl has the bird's face modeled at the front, allowing the individual forms to remain visually distinct whether displayed separately or stacked together.

Holt-Howard described them as nesting trays for condiments, sauces, jam, nuts, and other small foods. Their graduated sizes also make them resemble a set of measuring cups, although their documented purpose was tabletop serving.
